Actress Nina Dobrev recently opened up about her eye-opening experience during a birthday trip to Indonesia in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. The 36-year-old actress, known for her roles in TV series like “The Vampire Diaries,” expressed her shock and disappointment at the state of a beach she had previously visited, which was now covered in plastic waste.
Nina Dobrev, well-known for her advocacy for ocean conservation, embarked on the trip to Indonesia with a group of friends, including her now-fiancé Shaun White, close friend Julianne Hough, and her co-star Adam Devine from “The Out-Laws,” to celebrate her 34th birthday two years ago. However, what she encountered on her return to the beach left her “truly stunned in a horrible way.”
The actress described the distressing scene she encountered, stating that the picturesque beach she had once loved was now devoid of sand, replaced by a carpet of plastic litter. Dobrev recounted that every step she took elicited a crunching sound due to the overwhelming amount of plastic waste that covered the entire area, including straws, cups, plates, shoes, flip-flops, and clothing.
The sight of the litter, much of which appeared to be of North American origin, deeply saddened Dobrev as she realised the extent of pollution and its global impact. The actress and her friends immediately took action to clean up the beach, but she acknowledges the transient nature of their efforts, expressing a mix of satisfaction and frustration at the temporary solution.

Partnering with SC Johnson, she aims to raise awareness about the pressing issue of plastic waste through their advocacy campaign, which features a video centred around Zuzu the hermit crab.
The campaign, titled “Join Zuzu,” tells the story of the hermit crab finding a plastic bottle on the beach and embarking on a dangerous journey to recycle it, highlighting the human impact on marine life. Dobrev emphasises the importance of such initiatives that humanise environmental issues, making them more relatable and encouraging action to address the problem.
In a social media post reflecting on her birthday trip in 2023, Dobrev expressed gratitude for the experience and the meaningful connections formed during the celebration.
