A young mother, aged 29, diagnosed with terminal cancer, is bravely facing her prognosis as she navigates making meaningful memories with her four children. Ashleigh Ellerton, from Bridlington in England, has been fighting a battle with cancer that began in 2020, when she sought medical attention for pain in her right breast. Despite her young age and no family history of the disease, Ellerton persisted in seeking further evaluation after being initially dismissed for being “too young” for cancer.

After a lump appeared, Ellerton underwent tests that revealed she had inflammatory breast cancer, a rare and aggressive form of the illness. She underwent intensive treatment including chemotherapy, radiation, and a mastectomy. In December of the same year, she received the news that she was clear of the disease. Ellerton, whose children range in age from 5 to 11, expressed her concerns, feeling that the cancer was not done with her yet.

In 2021, Ellerton married her partner Simon, but she confided in her nurses that she believed her cancer would return in her liver. Unfortunately, her premonition came true when she developed sepsis and during surgery to address the condition, doctors discovered that the cancer had spread to her liver. Despite the devastating diagnosis in 2022, Ellerton remained hopeful, believing she had more time to fight the disease.

As the cancer progressed, Ellerton began experiencing migraines, indicating the spread of the cancer to her brain and spinal cord. Last autumn, she received the heartbreaking news that she had only three months to live. She faced the difficult task of sharing this prognosis with her children, recounting the heart-wrenching moment when they reacted with tears and confusion, especially her youngest who didn’t fully grasp the situation.
Ellerton’s determination to create lasting memories with her children led to the initiation of a GoFundMe campaign by her mother, describing Ellerton as her children’s pillar of strength and support. Despite the challenges she faces, Ellerton’s biggest goal was to make it to Christmas and continue cherishing moments with her loved ones. She hopes that her children will remember her presence and the unwavering fight she put up against the disease.
Throughout her journey, Ellerton’s resilience and bravery serve as a testament to her love for her family and her unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. As she shares her story, she emphasises the importance of treasuring the time spent with loved ones and finding strength in the midst of life’s challenges. Ellerton’s poignant narrative reminds us of the value of embracing each moment and standing strong in the face of uncertainty.
