Disgraced Lead Investigator Fired Over Offensive Texts About Karen Read

The lead investigator in the Karen Read case has been terminated from his position following the exposure of vulgar and offensive messages he sent about the murder suspect, Karen Read. Michael Proctor, a Massachusetts State Police trooper, was fired less than a year after his inappropriate messages came to light during Read’s trial for the 2022 killing of her boyfriend, John O’Keefe, a Boston police officer.

O’Keefe was discovered injured in the snow in Canton, Mass., on January 29, 2022. Read’s defence argued that she had been framed for his killing. However, her trial ended in a mistrial on July 1 when the jury could not come to a unanimous decision on whether she was responsible for O’Keefe’s death. She is set to face trial again in April.

During the trial, Proctor was compelled to read out the offensive words he had used to describe Read to his colleagues, including terms like “whack-job” and a derogatory term. He also admitted to messaging his sister expressing his wish for Read to die by suicide.

After the trial concluded, Proctor was relieved of his duties, then later suspended without pay, and has now been officially fired by the Massachusetts State Police in a “dishonourable discharge.” The State Police Colonel emphasized the importance of upholding professionalism and integrity within the department, stating that accountability is crucial when any member fails to uphold the organization’s values.
