Carl Lewis, a track legend and a 10-time Olympic medal winner, has revealed exclusive details about his iconic decision to compete in a bodysuit during his athletic career. In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Lewis shared that he made the bold choice to wear a bodysuit after his 1984 Olympic debut because he believed that “sex sells.”

Lewis, who won his first four gold medals in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, decided to switch up his uniform for the 1988 Olympics. In 1985, he made waves by sporting a yellow and blue bodysuit at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, becoming the first runner to do so in competition. Reflecting on his decision, Lewis emphasised that he and his fellow athletes had incredible bodies that deserved to be showcased.

The 63-year-old track star explained, “Why did I wear a bodysuit? Because our bodies looked good. We were covered, and I’m like, ‘Yeah my body, our bodies, track bodies look amazing.’ So why are we not showing our bodies?” Interestingly, Lewis noted that while his choice was initially met with surprise and raised eyebrows, it has now become a more accepted practice in the world of athletics.
In a documentary titled “I’m Carl Lewis,” which delves into his remarkable career, Lewis addresses the controversy surrounding his bodysuit and the reactions it garnered. He recalled being called names like “androgynous” and a “fairy” by critics, but he remained unfazed, viewing it as a strategic move to establish his brand in the competitive sports arena.
Throughout the ’80s and ’90s, Lewis achieved immense success, securing multiple Olympic gold medals and setting records in the process. Despite his athletic accomplishments, Lewis faced scrutiny from the media for his unconventional approach to the sport, including his fashion choices and outspoken nature regarding issues affecting athletes.
Lewis expressed his desire to break free from the traditional constraints placed on amateur athletes, stating, “There were certain norms of an amateur athlete that you had to have… You are not allowed to be fashionable, period. If you’re fashionable, something’s wrong. You’re not allowed to speak about issues that affect you. You’re just supposed to be happy.” This defiance of norms and his unique approach set Lewis apart on and off the track.
As an entertainer at heart, Lewis incorporated elements of performance into his races, treating each competition like a stage where he could showcase his dramatic flair. Beyond his athletic pursuits, Lewis ventured into music and even posed in red stilettos for a controversial ad campaign, challenging stereotypes and societal expectations placed on Black men.
Lewis’s candid revelations shed light on the struggles he faced in an industry where conformity often overshadowed individuality. His bold choices and unapologetic attitude reflect a legacy of pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to be a successful athlete in a world that thrives on stereotypes and expectations.
The story of Carl Lewis serves as a testament to the power of self-expression and breaking free from societal norms, inspiring future generations to embrace their uniqueness and let their talents shine, both on and off the track. Lewis’s journey exemplifies the resilience and determination required to succeed in the face of adversity, leaving a lasting impact on the world of sports and beyond.
