Concordia University Student Survives Near-Death Experience with Help from Classmates​

Humberto Barraza, a student at Concordia University in Mequon, Wisconsin, faced a life-threatening ordeal when he suffered cardiac arrest in his dorm room in October 2024. Despite flatlining three times, Barraza was saved by the quick thinking and actions of his peers, as reported by ABC affiliate WISN. Following the incident, Barraza slipped into a coma for a week and was later diagnosed with Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome, a rare heart condition, according to CBS 58.

During a recent celebration hosted by the university on March 12, Barraza expressed the surreal experience of waking up and being told he had died multiple times. The support and swift response from his classmates were instrumental in his survival, turning what could have been a tragedy into a tale of resilience and friendship.

Barraza, a theater student, had just finished a dance practice when he suddenly felt chest pains and subsequently suffered a seizure in his dorm. His friend, Aiden Batiansile, immediately sprang into action, administering CPR as another student used an app to alert first responders. Amongst the helpers was Brooke Trendel, a fellow student who also served as a trained EMT with the local fire department, showcasing the importance of having individuals with medical knowledge in times of crisis.

Upon arrival, paramedics utilized a defibrillator to stabilise Barraza before rushing him to the hospital. The road to recovery was challenging, with Barraza having to relearn basic functions like walking and speaking during his month-long hospital stay. However, with determination and the unwavering support of his community, Barraza is now on the path to returning to his studies come the fall semester.

The heartwarming celebration on March 12 honoured not only Barraza’s miraculous recovery but also the bravery and quick actions of his classmates who stepped in to save his life. Emmitt Smith, a campus safety officer involved in the rescue, expressed his personal connection to the event, highlighting the university’s commitment to treating all students like family.
