Through his work with Humane World for Animals, which was previously known as HSI, Henney has managed to rescue five dogs from this trade, providing them with a second chance at a loving and caring life.

Henney and his wife, Ru Kumagai, are proud pet parents to Juliette, whom they affectionately call ‘Julie’. Recalling the rescue, Henney shares that Julie was saved from a dog meat farm located approximately 100 miles from Seoul, Korea. She had spent her early years being used for breeding in puppy mills, a harsh reality for many dogs in the trade. Fortunately, Henney and his wife were able to rescue Julie before she met a tragic fate like many other dogs in similar situations.

However, Julie’s past traumas lingered, and she struggled to adapt to a normal life in a loving home. She displayed signs of disconnection and isolation, behaviours ingrained from her heartbreaking past. Despite these challenges, Henney and his family remained steadfast in their efforts to help Julie heal and learn to trust again.

Henney credits much of Julie’s progress to their late dog, Roscoe, who also came from a meat farm. Describing Roscoe as intelligent and loving, Henney explains how Roscoe played a crucial role in helping Julie acclimate to her new life. Tragically, Roscoe passed away, leaving a void in their hearts, but Julie stepped up to fill the gap, showing signs of affection and progress.

For Henney, the mission to save dogs from the meat trade holds personal significance. Growing up as an only child in a small town, Henney found solace and companionship in his dogs, who supported him through challenging times. He views his involvement in this cause as a way to honour the invaluable bond he shared with his furry friends.
