High School Athlete Faces Charges for Assaulting Competitor in Track Race

In a shocking turn of events at the Virginia High School League Championship held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, a high school sprinter has been charged with assault for striking a fellow competitor in the head with a metal baton during a track race. The incident occurred during the second leg of the 4×200 relay, where Alaila Everett from I.C. Norcom High School allegedly hit Kaelen Tucker from Brookville High School while running alongside her.
Video footage of the incident shows Everett swinging her baton, seemingly hitting Tucker in the head, causing her to drop the baton and move to the side. As a result, the I.C. Norcom High School team was disqualified from the event, and the consequences for Everett have escalated to legal action.
Bethany Harrison, the commonwealth’s attorney for the city of Lynchburg, confirmed that a misdemeanor charge of assault and battery has been issued against Everett. Tucker, who suffered a “slight concussion” and a “possible skull fracture,” expressed her disbelief over the incident, stating, “I didn’t even know. I didn’t know what had happened.”
In an interview on Good Morning America, Everett defended herself, saying, “I would never do that on purpose. That’s not in my character.” She described the sequence of events, explaining that Tucker’s actions led to accidental contact between the baton and Tucker’s arm, causing her to lose balance and inadvertently hit Tucker.
Both schools, as well as the Virginia High School League, are actively investigating the incident. Portsmouth Public Schools immediately reported the matter to the VHSL and stated their cooperation with the ongoing investigation. Dr. Lauren Nolasco, the chief communications officer for Portsmouth Public Schools, mentioned that they will abide by the ruling resulting from the VHSL’s enquiry.
The community reaction has been mixed, with calls for accountability and consequences for Everett’s actions. The Portsmouth NAACP released a statement indicating their review of the situation, reflecting the seriousness of the incident and its impact on those involved. Efforts to reach out to Brookville High School for comment have not yet yielded a response.
This incident has raised concerns about sportsmanship, safety, and proper conduct in high school athletics. It serves as a reminder of the importance of upholding values of fair play and respect for fellow competitors in all sporting events.
