West Virginia Mountaineers football head coach, Rich Rodriguez, has recently made headlines by issuing a ban on his players participating in TikTok dance challenges. The decision was announced on Monday, March 10, as reported by the Associated Press and Sports Illustrated. While Rodriguez clarified that he is not prohibiting his players from using the popular social media app, he expressed concerns over the content they were sharing.
In a statement to reporters, Rodriguez, aged 61, explained his rationale behind the ban, stating, “They’re going to be on it, so I’m not banning them from it. I’m just banning them from dancing on it.” The coach emphasised his desire to maintain a certain image for the team, mentioning that the sight of players in tights dancing on TikTok does not align with the “hard edge” persona he envisions for the Mountaineers.
Rodriguez defended his decision by asserting his authority to establish rules within the team, indicating that he prioritises the focus on winning football games over engaging in social media trends.
