Alaqua Animal Refuge, located in Walton County, Florida, recently came to the rescue of nine dogs that were victims of a backyard breeder. The distress call was made by a concerned individual who happened to be a family member of the breeder. The refuge’s vet team wasted no time in stepping in and removing over 51 pounds of matted fur from the suffering canines. These dogs, a mix of poodle and doodle breeds, had been living in appalling conditions, subjected to neglect and improper care.

The dogs rescued by Alaqua Animal Refuge were found to be in a dire state – their fur was so matted that it hindered their movement and caused various health issues.

Upon assessing the situation, the refuge decided to intervene and rescued the nine dogs from the breeder’s property. The vet team immediately embarked on a three-day process of meticulously shaving off the overgrown, feces-covered fur that had been causing the dogs immense discomfort and health problems. After the completion of the intense grooming session, over 51 pounds of matted fur were removed from the dogs, representing more than 10% of their total body weight. Shockingly, half of the dogs tested positive for heartworms, a potentially fatal illness that demanded extensive therapy.
