James’ spokesperson, Carol Ross, explained to PEOPLE that the musician had been battling fatigue after a strenuous day that included a long flight, sound check, and the live performance itself. The incident occurred about an hour into the show when James, noticeably struggling to breathe, decided to stop singing and seek assistance.
An audience member, Bill Freeze, took to Facebook to describe the alarming moment, mentioning that James appeared to be breathing heavily and had difficulty remaining on stage. Medical personnel promptly came to his aid, eventually leading to the concert’s premature conclusion. Reports indicate that paramedics and venue security provided immediate assistance, and James returned to New Jersey the following day.
Despite the setback, James’ representative assured fans that the iconic artist is now in good health. The singer is expected to resume his tour schedule, with his next performance set for March 15 in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
