Student Fainted, Others Reported Symptoms: Investigation Findings Revealed

Officials in Maine revealed that 11 students from a local school were taken to nearby hospitals after reporting feeling ill. Initially perceived as a potential gas leak, a subsequent investigation unveiled a different cause. The Scarborough Police Department shared a press release indicating a 911 call was received from the Wentworth School just after 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 6, regarding students falling sick.

The local fire department disclosed that a school nurse made the call and suspected a gas leak. Deputy Fire Chief John Brennan explained, “The school was fully evacuated as a precaution and a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) was declared.” An MCI signifies overwhelming demand on healthcare resources due to an influx of patients. However, a thorough inspection found no evidence of a gas leak or carbon monoxide presence within or around the school.

Scarborough Fire Chief Rich Kindelan assured during a press conference that multiple meter readings revealed no hazards in the building. Superintendent Diane Nadeau of Scarborough Public Schools recounted that during the incident, approximately 120 third and fourth-grade students were on stage rehearsing for a concert in the cafeteria at Wentworth School. One student fainted, followed by others experiencing respiratory issues.

All students and staff were moved to Scarborough High School, but Wentworth School reopened later, allowing their return. All 11 affected students were discharged from the hospitals by 1:30 p.m. Brennan mentioned that investigations are ongoing to determine if stage temperature and limited ventilation contributed to the students’ symptoms.

Pavithra Brasad shared her concern, as a parent of a third-grader at Wentworth, stating, “I just want everyone to be safe.” The school accommodates about 700 students in grades 3-5 and over 100 staff members. Despite multiple enquiries, a school representative declined to comment on the incident.
