Prince William, alongside his wife Kate Middleton, has been a staunch advocate for mental health awareness and support initiatives. Recently, the Duke of Cambridge celebrated a significant achievement for the mental health text service, Shout, which has now facilitated over three million conversations. Launched in 2019 with the support of William and Kate’s Royal Foundation, Shout offers round-the-clock messaging support for individuals facing mental health challenges.

Making a visit to Mental Health Innovations (MHI) on March 6, 2025, Prince William engaged with young volunteers from the organization’s Youth Advisory Board, which operates through both The Mix and Shout. Following a merger between MHI and The Mix, the collective efforts aim to utilise data-driven analysis and expertise to deliver innovative services and essential insights to bolster the nation’s mental health resources.
The integration of the charities has led to the development of a new network of free, 24/7 mental health support, which is projected to reach a broader audience of young people struggling with their overall well-being. Through the application of cutting-edge data science and AI, the merged entities are harnessing technology to enhance their services and provide crucial insights into the mental health landscape of various vulnerable groups across the UK.
Embracing a hands-on approach to supporting mental health, Prince William had pledged to undergo training as a volunteer for Shout. Subsequently, he has actively participated in taking calls and offering assistance anonymously, thereby fulfilling his commitment to bolstering mental health support services.
Shout has become an integral component of the mental health advocacy work championed by Prince William and Kate Middleton. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the royal couple recognised the dedication of Shout volunteers through a video call, lauding their efforts in sustaining mental health services during the crisis.
In a poignant encounter in 2021, William and Kate engaged in a heartfelt conversation with the parents of a 12-year-old boy, identified as “Jack,” who had found solace and support through Shout during a moment of severe anxiety. The boy’s father credited the service with playing a pivotal role in steering his son away from a life-threatening decision, underscoring the vital impact of mental health support services during critical moments.
Continuing his commitment to healthcare and mental well-being, Prince William visited the hospital where Kate Middleton was born, interacting with staff and volunteers to gain insights into the challenges faced by healthcare workers and the support systems in place for their well-being. During his visit, he emphasised the importance of prioritising mental health within the healthcare sector and advocating for holistic approaches to safeguarding the mental well-being of individuals working in high-pressure environments.
As Prince William navigates his role as a prominent advocate for mental health initiatives, his dedication to raising awareness and fostering support for mental health services remains a cornerstone of his public work alongside Kate Middleton. Through their continued efforts, the royal couple seeks to advance conversations around mental health, destigmatise seeking help, and ensure that vital support services like Shout are accessible to all individuals in need.
In a world where mental health challenges are increasingly prevalent, initiatives like Shout exemplify the transformative power of technology in providing timely support and resources for individuals navigating difficult circumstances. Prince William’s unwavering commitment to mental health advocacy serves as a beacon of hope, inspiring meaningful change and fostering a culture of compassion and support for all individuals facing mental health challenges.
