At least 15 individuals were injured following a mishap where two South Korea fighter jets mistakenly discharged eight bombs over a residential area in Pocheon. The unfortunate incident occurred during a live-fire exercise on Thursday, March 6, according to reports from local media outlets. The Air Force KF-16 aircraft released the bombs outside of the designated training location during the drills, as confirmed by military officials and fire authorities.

Located roughly 25 miles north of Seoul, Pocheon bore the brunt of the accidental bombings. The joint exercise, involving South Korean Air Force and U.S. forces, took an unexpected turn when the eight bombs were discharged outside the intended firing range. Two individuals were reported to have sustained serious injuries as a result, with an additional 13 people facing minor injuries, according to updated information from fire authorities later in the day.

Among the injured were five soldiers, as verified by military officials. Emergency services swiftly responded to the situation, transporting the casualties to a nearby hospital for immediate medical attention. A 60-year-old resident underwent surgery after being struck by shrapnel in the neck during the incident, while another individual suffered a fractured shoulder. The affected residents in the vicinity, approximately 50 in number, were evacuated to a safe location away from the impact zone.

The South Korean Air Force disclosed that a pilot’s error led to four of the bombs being misdirected due to inaccurate coordinates input during the flight preparations. The remaining four bombs were erroneously dropped by the second jet, prompting a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. An Air Force Operations Command official conveyed that steps would be taken to compensate for the damage caused and to assist in the swift recovery of those affected.

Not ruling out the possibility of a technical malfunction, the air force has vowed to ascertain the root cause of the mishap. The aftermath of the accidental bombings saw considerable damage to residential properties, a church, and a warehouse in the area, as reported by The Chosun Daily. Pocheon’s Mayor, Baek Young-hyun, described the site of impact as chaotic and reminiscent of a battlefield, urging a halt to all military exercises until adequate measures are established to reassure the local populace.

Following the live-fire incident, South Korea’s Air Force and Army, alongside the United States Forces Korea, refrained from immediate comments when contacted for additional information regarding the bombings.
