The aftermath of a harrowing school bus crash in Alabama has left the community in shock as details emerge about the incident that resulted in several students being injured. Reports from NBC affiliate WPMI, Fox affiliate WALA, and CBS affiliate WKRG detailed how the driver of the bus, operated by the Mobile County Public Schools (MCPS), allegedly fell asleep, leading to the bus running off the road and overturning. The incident took place on Mason Ferry Road in Wilmer, as reported by Al.com. Following the crash, a statement from MCPS indicated that 14 students were involved, with three of them being transported for injuries.
The driver of the bus, identified as Angela Lane Weaver, 47, from Lucedale, Miss., was among those injured and was taken to Springhill Hospital in Mobile for treatment. Additionally, six juvenile passengers were also injured and received medical attention at a local hospital, according to an update issued by the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) on February 13, as reported by WPMI.
According to the crash report, the bus was travelling at a speed of 54 mph in a 45 mph zone at the time of the incident. Investigations revealed that Weaver had a history of driving violations, including three speeding tickets over the past four years. Her infractions included speeding at 71 mph in a 45 mph zone in February 2021, 74 mph in a 55 mph zone in May 2023, and 80 mph in a 55 mph zone in September 2024.
Following the release of the crash report, MCPS expressed its collaboration with ALEA in investigating the accident and ensuring the safety of students. The agency’s findings highlighted that the driver’s actions were in violation of bus safety regulations, prompting the school board to place Weaver on administrative leave pending further disciplinary action.
