Renowned musician Rick Springfield has recently shared his journey of using drugs to combat his long-standing battle with depression. The iconic ’80s star, known for hits like “Jessie’s Girl,” revealed his experimentation with ketamine therapy in an effort to alleviate his depression, which has plagued him since his teenage years. In an exclusive feature with PEOPLE magazine, Springfield disclosed that while the ketamine therapy was not entirely effective for him, it sparked his interest in exploring alternative treatments, including micro-dosing LSD.

Expressing his curiosity about the effects of ketamine therapy on his creative processes and mental health, Springfield noted, “I wanted to see if it’d open a few things in my brain. It was a creative experiment and an experiment on depression.” Despite not finding the desired results with ketamine, he decided to delve into micro-dosing LSD as a potential alternative. Reflecting on his experience, Springfield shared, “I did acid, and that was actually a little better…I’m not averse to anything that helps me be happier and a better person.”
In addition to his experimentation with psychedelic therapies, Springfield highlighted the significant impact that reducing his alcohol consumption has had on his mental well-being. Making the decision to cut back on alcohol two years ago, he found that this lifestyle change had a more positive effect on his overall mental health than he had anticipated. While he occasionally indulges in alcohol during his performances, Springfield emphasized the importance of moderation and self-awareness.
Furthermore, Springfield emphasised the importance of embracing life’s simple pleasures and allowing himself the freedom to enjoy moments of relaxation and leisure, such as strolls on the beach with his wife of 40 years, Barbara Porter, and their dog. Shedding light on his evolving perspective, Springfield shared, “The healing part has been allowing myself to do things and not berating myself for wasting time. I’m claiming time by doing it now.”
As a vocal advocate for mental health awareness, Springfield has found solace in sharing his personal struggles with depression, believing that it not only helps him but also offers support to others facing similar challenges. He expressed, “I want people to know they’re not alone…It’s like sharing grief when someone dies, it’s very powerful.” By opening up about his journey and the unconventional methods he has explored, Springfield aims to break the stigma surrounding mental health issues and encourage conversations about holistic approaches to well-being.
Despite his ongoing battle with depression, Springfield remains active in his music career, recently releasing Volume 2 of his Greatest Hits album and preparing for his upcoming I Want My ’80s tour. Through his resilience and openness about his struggles, Rick Springfield continues to inspire others to prioritise mental health and seek out unconventional solutions for their well-being.
In an industry often clouded by stigma and secrecy, Springfield’s willingness to share his vulnerabilities and alternative therapies serves as a beacon of hope for those navigating similar challenges. His journey reminds us of the importance of self-care, seeking support, and embarking on unique paths to mental wellness.
