Vanessa Lachey, co-host of Love Is Blind, found herself in a pivotal parenting moment recently as she engaged in an essential conversation with her 10-year-old daughter, Brooklyn. During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show with her husband Nick Lachey, Vanessa shared the reason behind her decision to have “the birds and the bees” talk with her daughter.

The family had been battling a cold that affected everyone, including their two sons, Phoenix and Camden. While confined to bed, Vanessa and Brooklyn watched a series of romantic comedies. It was during this time that the Jennifer Lopez-led film, The Backup Plan, sparked the conversation about reproduction.

In a humorous anecdote shared with host Kelly Clarkson, Vanessa described the pivotal scene in the movie that led to the talk. She recalled, “So, I push play and I’m thinking I’m going to ease into it. First scene, she’s in the chair legs up in stirrups [and] he comes in with a Q-tip. He’s about to artificially inseminate her.”

Vanessa paused the movie to explain the concept to her daughter, who amusingly responded with curiosity. Vanessa continued, “Then, I went into it and we had this whole talk explaining the science of it and [Nick] wasn’t in the room.”

The conversation didn’t end there, as they proceeded to watch the entire film, leading to more questions from Brooklyn. Vanessa shared, “She’s like, ‘I’m so confused, so you can opt for the Q-tip and not the guy?’ And, I was like ‘Absolutely’. I said, ‘Yes girl, whatever mama wants.'”

Despite raising their children in the spotlight of two public figures, Vanessa and Nick have made a conscious decision to keep their children away from social media. Vanessa revealed in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE in March 2024 that they have committed to delaying their children’s access to phones until sixth grade, emphasizing the importance of privacy and a grounded upbringing.

In the same interview, Vanessa touched upon her fundamental parenting approach, highlighting the significance of expressing love consistently to their children. She explained, “The one thing that we’ve always agreed on is that we will always, always let our children know how much we love them.”
