The 21-year-old actor shared insights with PEOPLE earlier this month about his role as Lochlan Ratliff in the third season of the popular series, shedding light on how he prepared for the character. Before jetting off to Thailand for filming, Nivola recounted that creator Mike White had tasked him with watching a renowned Bravo reality show as a source of inspiration for his role.

The series in question was “Southern Charm,” a show set in South Carolina that follows the lives of several cast members, including Shep Rose and Austen Kroll. Nivola revealed, “Mike told us to go watch Southern Charm,” emphasising how the cast drew inspiration from the dynamic characters in the show. He further mentioned that Jason Isaacs, who portrayed their on-screen father, modelled his accent and character after the cast of “Southern Charm.”

In a light-hearted manner, Nivola shared that his on-screen sister, Sarah Catherine Hook, had the upper hand as she was already well-versed in the required Southern charm. Hook, originally from Alabama, amusingly expressed, “I found out through you guys. I was like, ‘He didn’t tell me to watch Southern Charm! I’m feeling left out.'” The Ratliff family comprises Nivola, Hook, and Patrick Schwarzenegger, who portray siblings with affluent Southern roots, alongside their parents played by Isaacs and Parker Posey.
