Renowned drummer Rick Buckler, known for his exceptional contribution to the iconic British rock band The Jam, has tragically passed away at the age of 69.
In a statement released by Buckler’s family to the BBC, he was lovingly described as a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather who touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed. The family revealed that Buckler peacefully departed on Monday evening in Woking after a brief illness, surrounded by his loved ones.

The saddening news of Buckler’s demise follows his recent withdrawal from his spoken word tour due to ongoing health challenges, as shared on Facebook. Paying tribute to their bandmate, singer and guitarist Paul Weller reminisced about their humble beginnings rehearsing in Woking and the evolution of their music, expressing shock and sadness at the sudden loss.
Bruce Foxton, The Jam’s bassist, also expressed his grief over Buckler’s passing, acknowledging his pivotal role in shaping the band’s distinctive sound with his innovative drumming patterns. Foxton fondly remembered their collaboration and extended his heartfelt condolences to Buckler’s family during this trying time.

Formed in 1972, The Jam made a significant mark on the music scene with hits like “In the City,” “Going Underground,” “That’s Entertainment,” and “Just Who Is the 5 O’Clock Hero?” blending elements of punk, new wave, and soul genres to captivate audiences. Despite disbanding in 1982, their music continues to resonate with fans worldwide.
Post-The Jam era saw Buckler joining Time UK and later forming Sharp in the mid-’80s alongside his former bandmates, showcasing his versatile musical talents. Transitioning to production and carpentry in subsequent years, Buckler’s passion for music endured as he briefly reunited with The Gift in 2005 for a memorable stage appearance.
