Imam Muhsin Hendricks, the first openly gay Imam, was tragically ambushed and killed while on his way to officiate a wedding in South Africa. The incident took place in Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape region on Saturday, Feb. 15. The Eastern Cape provincial police revealed that Imam Hendricks, aged 58, was travelling in a VW TRoc with a driver when their vehicle was blocked by another car. Subsequently, two unidentified individuals with covered faces emerged from the vehicle and opened fire on Imam Hendricks, resulting in his death. The motive behind this horrific attack remains unclear, as reported by CNN.

Hendricks, who was a prominent advocate for LGBTQI+ rights within faith communities, was in Gqeberha to conduct the marriage ceremonies of two interfaith heterosexual couples when the tragic incident occurred, according to his non-profit organisation, Al-Ghurbaah Foundation. The South African Human Rights Commission strongly condemned the heinous act and urged law enforcement authorities to swiftly investigate the crime to uncover the motive behind Imam Hendricks’ murder. The commission emphasised the importance of implementing laws against hate crimes, especially if the killing was related to Hendricks’ support for the LGBTQI+ community.

Julia Ehrt, the executive director of the International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex Association (ILGA), expressed concern that Imam Hendricks’ murder could be a hate crime and called for a thorough investigation. She highlighted Hendricks’ significant contributions in supporting and mentoring LGBTQI+ individuals in South Africa and globally, noting his efforts to promote reconciliation between faith and sexual orientation. Hendricks founded the Al-Ghurbaah Foundation in 2018, which offers support to Queer Muslims in reconciling their identity with Islam.
