A heartbreaking incident unfolded as a woman tragically lost her life in a car crash despite her husband’s valiant efforts to rescue her. Susan Hilmes, 59, met with a fatal accident after the vehicle they were travelling in plunged into a pond in Illinois. The devastating incident took place near 15028 Rod and Gun Road, just north of Breese, around 12:16 a.m. local time on Sunday, Feb. 16, as reported by the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office.

According to authorities, the car failed to negotiate a curve on the road, leading to the disastrous crash into the pond. The vehicle flipped upside down, with only the rear tires visible above the water surface. While Steven Hilmes, 65, managed to extricate himself from the vehicle, his wife Susan remained trapped inside. Despite Steven’s heroic efforts, which included three brave attempts to rescue his wife from the cold, dark waters, he was unable to save her.

Following his unsuccessful rescue attempts, Steven hurried to seek assistance from a nearby resident. In a distressing 911 call, a woman informed the dispatcher that a man had approached her home, revealing that his wife was trapped at the bottom of the pond. Susan was eventually retrieved from the submerged vehicle and rushed to St. Joseph’s Hospital, where she was later pronounced deceased, according to the sheriff’s office.
Susan Hilmes was remembered as a devoted mother, who prioritized her family above all else. A graduate of St. Anthony High School in St. Louis, she went on to pursue a career at the PBS Network before working as a producer at WTVC-TV Channel 9 in Chattanooga, Tenn. Not only was she passionate about sports and music, but she also actively supported and coached her children’s sports teams, always cheering them on from the sidelines.
The family is set to hold a funeral for Susan on Saturday, Feb. 22, in St. Louis, in honour of her memory. They have also called for increased safety measures, advocating for a barrier between the water body and the roadway to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Dennis Perez, acting chief deputy of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, echoed these sentiments, underlining the importance of such precautions in icy waters to ensure the safety of motorists.
The heartbreaking loss of Susan Hilmes serves as a poignant reminder of the unpredictable nature of life and the importance of safety measures on roadways near water bodies. The community mourns the tragic incident, extending their heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
