In a bid to revolutionize customer experience, Wendy’s is set to implement Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology in the drive-thrus of more of its establishments across the United States this year. The announcement, made by Wendy’s CEO Kirk Tanner during the fourth-quarter earnings call on February 13, has sparked mixed reactions among fans of the popular fast-food chain.

The fast-food giant plans to roll out AI-powered ordering systems in a significant portion of its nearly 6,000 U.S. locations by the end of 2025. Currently, Wendy’s already uses an AI voice assistant, which was initially trialed in around 100 locations in 2023. The company aims to expand this technology to 500 to 600 additional locations by the end of this year, according to Tanner.
Named FreshAI, Wendy’s AI ordering assistant is a product of collaboration with Google Cloud. Tanner shared that he personally tests the technology several times a week at a Wendy’s outlet close to the company’s headquarters in Dublin, Ohio. FreshAI is designed to enhance customer interactions by allowing them to customize their orders effectively and efficiently.
Tanner highlighted that FreshAI has shown improvement in order accuracy, addressing a typical concern associated with AI-driven ordering systems in the food industry. If the initial implementation proves successful, Wendy’s may consider deploying voice AI technology throughout its entire network, as hinted by Tanner during the earnings call.
Upon learning about Wendy’s plans to introduce FreshAI, customers expressed a range of opinions. Some welcomed the innovation, lauding the potential for enhanced speed and accuracy in their orders. However, others were sceptical, citing negative experiences with similar AI assistants and expressing a preference for human interaction during their drive-thru visits.
On online platforms such as the “r/Wendys” subreddit, customers voiced concerns over potential issues with AI technology, with some indicating they may discontinue their patronage if human staff is replaced by AI. However, others shared positive experiences with AI-driven systems, noting the convenience and accuracy it offers compared to human-operated drive-thrus.
Some customers suggested that Wendy’s should prioritize lowering prices and improving food quality over implementing AI solutions. Nevertheless, supporters of the move towards AI technology in drive-thrus pointed out the potential benefits, such as improved clarity in interactions and order accuracy, especially in noisy environments.
As Wendy’s prepares to expand the use of AI in its drive-thrus, the public remains divided on whether this technological advancement will enhance or detract from the overall customer experience. With ongoing developments in voice AI technology, Wendy’s looks towards a future where innovation and efficiency drive its service offerings to meet the evolving expectations of its customers.
In conclusion, Wendy’s foray into AI technology marks a significant step towards enhancing its drive-thru operations, aiming to balance efficiency with customer satisfaction. As the fast-food industry continues to embrace digital advancements, Wendy’s stands at the forefront of innovation, poised to redefine the drive-thru experience for its patrons.
