The suspects, identified as Precious Arzuaga, Jennifer A. Quijano, Kyle Sage, Patrick A. Goodwin, and Emily Motyka, have been charged with murder in the second degree, specifically with depraved indifference. The victim had been staying at Patty’s Lodge in Hopewell, N.Y., alongside Arzuaga and other individuals, the police disclosed. All five individuals have appeared in court and have been placed in the Ontario County Jail.

Law enforcement authorities shared that evidence suggests Nordquist was subjected to continuous physical abuse between December 2024 and February 2025. Multiple search warrants were executed at Patty’s Lodge and other related locations, where items such as electronic devices, clothing, and personal belongings were collected for further analysis. It was revealed that the victim endured prolonged physical and psychological torment before his remains were disposed of in Yates County, with the Monroe County Medical Examiner’s Office set to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
During a press conference, Captain Kelly Swift of the New York State Police Troop E’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation raised concerns about the nature of the crime, refraining from ruling out the possibility of a hate crime motive as investigations continue. Swift expressed deep shock over the “disturbing pattern of abuse” that culminated in Nordquist’s untimely demise, emphasizing the repeated acts of violence inflicted on the victim. Ontario County District Attorney Jim Ritts labelled the case as one of the most egregious homicide investigations the office has ever encountered.
The victim’s mother, Linda Nordquist, spoke to CNN affiliate KARE about her son, describing him as someone with a “heart of gold” who would not harm anyone. Rochester LGBTQ+ Together also mourned Nordquist’s death on social media, highlighting the tragedy of losing a cherished member of the community in such horrific circumstances. The authorities indicated that the investigation is ongoing, and additional details may emerge as the case progresses.
This devastating incident serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by transgender individuals and the importance of upholding their rights and safety. As the community mourns the loss of Sam Nordquist, efforts to seek justice and prevent such tragedies in the future remain paramount. The impact of this crime reverberates not only within the victim’s family and friends but also across society, underscoring the imperative to address violence and discrimination against transgender individuals.
