Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old charged with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has released his first public statement expressing gratitude for the overwhelming support he has received. The statement was shared on a newly created website by his legal defense team on Friday, Feb. 14. Mangione wrote, “I am overwhelmed by — and grateful for — everyone who has written me to share their stories and express their support.”

In his statement, Mangione acknowledged that the support he has received transcended political, racial, and class divisions, with letters pouring in from across the country and around the globe to the Metropolitan Detention Center where he is currently incarcerated. Despite the volume of letters, Mangione assured, “While it is impossible for me to reply to most letters, please know that I read every one that I receive.”
Mangione’s legal team established the website to provide accurate information about his cases, address frequently asked questions, and dispel any misinformation circulating. The team aims to share factual information regarding the multiple prosecutions Mangione faces, as he prepares for his next court appearance scheduled for Friday, Feb. 21. Mangione had pleaded not guilty to federal murder charges in late December after Thompson was fatally shot on Dec. 4.
Recently, Mangione accepted nearly $300,000 in donations from over 10,000 individual supporters to cover his legal fees. The donations were facilitated by the December 4 Legal Committee through a fundraiser on GiveSendGo. Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione’s lead attorney, expressed his appreciation for the outpouring of support from donors.
Following his arrest in Altoona, Pennsylvania on Dec. 9 after a tip-off at a local McDonald’s, Mangione faces federal murder charges that could potentially lead to the death penalty. Additionally, he is confronted with state murder charges accusing him of terrorism, to which he has also pleaded not guilty. Mangione is currently held in Brooklyn, where coincidentally, Sean “Diddy” Combs is also serving time.
As the case progresses, Mangione remains thankful for the heartfelt support he has received during this challenging time. The community’s generosity in donations and messages of support has not gone unnoticed, and Mangione looks ahead with optimism, eager to continue fighting his legal battle with the backing of his supporters.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Mangione’s case continues to attract public interest, with ongoing developments expected in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for further updates on this evolving story as Mangione navigates the complexities of the legal system in his pursuit of justice and exoneration.
