After a temporary ban that lasted nearly a month, TikTok has made its return to the Apple and Google app stores. The popular short-form video app resurfaced on Thursday, Feb. 13, much to the delight of its users worldwide, as reported by the Associated Press and Reuters.

The comeback comes on the heels of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, allowing TikTok an additional 75 days before a law banning the social media platform in the U.S. would come into effect. Recently, the Justice Department assured Apple and Google in letters that they would not face fines for offering the app in their stores, as per The New York Times.
The restoration of TikTok to the app stores also saw a surge in iPhones with the app installed selling for up to $5 million on eBay, following the brief ban. President Trump hinted at the possibility of extending the ban deadline beyond the stipulated timeline, stating, “We have a lot of people interested in TikTok.”
Apple, Google, and TikTok have remained tight-lipped in response to requests for comment regarding the reinstatement of the app. The saga began on Jan. 18 when TikTok was initially pulled from the app stores following concerns over data privacy and national security, particularly relating to its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.
Despite assurances from TikTok that user data would not be shared with the Chinese government, the ban was enforced by Congress and upheld by the Supreme Court. However, service was swiftly restored for American users within 24 hours, with a message of gratitude towards President Trump for enabling TikTok to continue operating in the U.S.
While TikTok creators expressed optimism about the app’s comeback during a call earlier in the week, the app was still unavailable on Apple and Google stores until its recent reappearance. The company remains committed to working towards a long-term solution to keep TikTok operational in the United States.
The return of TikTok to the app stores marks a significant chapter in its tumultuous journey, with millions of users eagerly anticipating its revival. The app’s resilience in the face of challenges highlights its popularity and cultural impact in the realm of social media.
As TikTok enthusiasts celebrate its comeback, the future of the app in the U.S. remains uncertain, pending further developments and potential regulatory decisions. Stay tuned for more updates on TikTok’s resurgence and its ongoing efforts to address concerns surrounding data security and user privacy.
