In a recent revelation, the producer of the Sly Stone documentary, “SLY LIVES!” (also known as The Burden of Black Genius), discussed the reason why the iconic musician did not participate in the film. During a Q&A session following a screening of the documentary, the producer shed light on the decision not to interview the 81-year-old music legend, born Sylvester Stewart, on camera.
The producer, Joseph Patel, along with director Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, shared that after interviewing Sly for the Oscar-winning documentary “Summer of Soul” in 2020, they observed that his health had deteriorated significantly. Patel explained, “He can’t speak in full sentences. His eyes reveal a precociousness and a lucidity that’s there, but his motor function doesn’t exist.” This led them to conclude that it would not be “empathetic” to include Stone in the documentary given his current health condition.

Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, known for his previous work on “Summer of Soul” and “Ladies and Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music,” expressed regret for not having an ‘intervention talk’ with black artists who have faced career challenges. “SLY LIVES!” delves into Sly Stone’s journey as the frontman of the renowned funk-rock band Sly and the Family Stone, famous for hits like “Everyday People” and “Family Affair.”

While the documentary touches on Stone’s struggles with substance abuse, Questlove emphasised the importance of portraying Stone as a person rather than a mere persona. He highlighted the rarity of Black individuals being seen as humans in media representations. The film aims to humanize Stone, sharing anecdotes from his three children, Novena Carmel, Sylvette Robinson, and Sylvester Stewart Jr.
Questlove mentioned that certain aspects of Stone’s life, such as his decision to live in an RV at one point, were omitted in favour of showcasing his humanity. He shared a light-hearted moment from the documentary, mentioning how Novena discussed Sly Stone’s favourite pizza, adding a touch of personal insight into the musician’s life.
Despite Stone’s absence from the documentary, his legacy and impact on the music industry are celebrated in “SLY LIVES!” which is currently available for streaming on Hulu. The film provides a deeper understanding of Sly Stone’s artistry and the challenges he faced, shedding light on the human side of the legendary musician.
The decision to exclude Sly Stone from the documentary’s interviews came from a place of empathy and respect for his health struggles. By focusing on Stone’s humanity and personal anecdotes, the documentary aims to honour his legacy in a sincere and thoughtful manner. “SLY LIVES!” serves as a poignant tribute to a music icon, offering audiences a glimpse into the life and journey of Sly Stone.
In conclusion, the Sly Stone documentary stands as a testament to the resilience and artistry of a music legend, showcasing the depth of his impact on the industry. Despite facing health challenges that prevented his direct participation, Sly Stone’s presence is strongly felt throughout the documentary, leaving a lasting impression on viewers.
