The heart-stopping event took place on Tuesday, Feb. 4 at a railroad crossing in Layton, Utah, and was captured by various news outlets. Reports indicated that a white SUV came to a stop at the crossing as the warning signals activated, signalling an incoming train. However, a pickup truck then rear-ended the SUV, propelling it onto the tracks with the crossing arms descending.

Utah Transit Authority spokesperson Gavin Gustafson revealed in an email to PEOPLE that the SUV driver initially tried to reverse but halted when the vehicle made contact with the crossing arms. Fortunately, the quick-witted driver managed to exit the SUV just moments before the oncoming FrontRunner train made contact. The train was travelling at 67 mph, eventually slowing to 32 mph upon impact.

Videos shared by the Utah Transit Authority depicted the nail-biting moments leading up to the collision, showing the SUV being nudged onto the tracks by the pickup truck as the crossing arm descended. The driver’s attempt to reverse and the subsequent exit from the vehicle just before the train struck were also caught on camera, highlighting the sheer luck and quick decision-making that averted disaster.
Gustafson emphasised the critical importance of vigilance around train tracks, reminding drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians that trains cannot swerve to avoid obstacles and can take a considerable distance to come to a stop. He also advised individuals in similar situations to prioritize safety by pushing through crossing arms or cautiously pulling forward if feasible, in order to prevent potentially catastrophic accidents.
Despite the alarming nature of the incident, there were no reported injuries resulting from the collision. Gustafson underscored the relief felt by authorities that no harm befell anyone involved, even as the estimated costs of the damage sustained by the FrontRunner train were projected to be significant, reaching six figures.
The Layton Police Department echoed this sentiment, confirming the absence of injuries in the aftermath of the event. Additionally, the driver responsible for rear-ending the SUV and triggering the chain of events was issued a citation as a consequence of the incident, underscoring the importance of road safety and caution while driving.
In a world where transportation safety remains a paramount concern, this incident serves as a stark reminder of the swift and unforeseeable nature of accidents on the road. It also highlights the critical importance of maintaining attentiveness and quick decision-making skills when faced with sudden threats or dangers while driving. Ultimately, the outcome of this near miss in Utah serves as a testament to the potential consequences of a few split-second decisions on the road.
