Monty the Giant Schnauzer has stolen the spotlight by clinching the prestigious Best in Show title at the 149th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show Presented by Purina Pro Plan. The 5-year-old Monty emerged victorious on February 11, marking a historic win for the Giant Schnauzer breed.
The 2025 Westminster Dog Show was a highly-anticipated event as it returned to Madison Square Garden in New York City after a 4-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This year’s show saw over 2,500 dogs from more than 200 breeds vying for the top honours, making it a fiercely competitive event.
Monty, whose full name is GCHG CH Hearthmore’s Wintergreen Mountain RI CGC TKN FITB, stood out among the pack and was able to secure the Best in Show prize after excelling in the confirmation show. The final decision was made by Best in Show Judge Paula Nykiel, who recognised Monty’s exceptional qualities.
Before claiming the Best in Show title, Monty first secured the Best in Breed title for the Giant Schnauzer and followed it up by winning the Best in Group honour for the Working Group. These accolades set the stage for Monty’s triumphant moment on the grandest stage of the Westminster Dog Show.
During the Best in Show round, Monty faced stiff competition from six other talented canines, including Bourbon the Whippet, Mercedes the German Shepherd, Neal the Bichon Frisé, Comet the Shih Tzu, Freddie the English Springer Spaniel, and Archer the Skye Terrier. In the end, Monty emerged as the standout performer, while Bourbon the Whippet claimed the Reserve Best in Show title.
Monty’s success can be credited not only to the dog’s prowess but also to their dedicated handler, Kate Bernadin, who played a pivotal role in guiding Monty to victory. This win adds another feather to their cap, following their previous triumph at the 2024 AKC National Championship.
The victory of Monty the Giant Schnauzer marks a significant milestone for the breed, as Monty becomes the first of its kind to clinch the coveted Best in Show title at the Westminster Dog Show. This achievement further solidifies Monty’s reputation as a top contender in the competitive world of dog shows.
In conclusion, Monty’s impressive win at the 2025 Westminster Dog Show is a testament to the dog’s exceptional qualities and the skillful handling of their dedicated owner. This victory will be remembered as a historic moment in the annals of the prestigious dog show, showcasing the best and brightest talents in the world of canine competition.
