A father in Seattle has been charged after shoving two child referees during his son’s youth hockey game at the Kraken Community Iceplex on Sunday, February 9. The man, identified as 42-year-old Uriel Isaac Cortes Gonzalez, was caught on video walking onto the ice and pushing the 12-year-old and 14-year-old referees onto their backs.
According to reports, Gonzalez has been charged with two counts of fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor offence. The incident, which was captured by the Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association, sparked outrage and concern over the safety of young officials and players in recreational sports.

The Seattle Fire Department confirmed that both referees were in ‘stable condition’ following the shove and did not require hospitalization. This disturbing incident has shed light on the importance of maintaining respect and sportsmanship in youth sports and the significant role parents play in setting a positive example for young athletes.
Despite claiming that he was defending his son, Gonzalez’s actions have been widely condemned by the hockey community. Witnesses reported that the father’s response was disproportionate to the situation on the ice, where a brief scuffle between players was swiftly addressed by the referees.
Subsequent investigations revealed that there was no ongoing fight at the time of the incident, contradicting Gonzalez’s account. The repercussions of his actions have led to a ban from the Kraken Community Iceplex, sending a stark message that aggression towards officials, especially minors, will not be tolerated in the sporting environment.
The Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association president, Jody Carpenter, issued a statement denouncing the assault and emphasising the vital principles of sportsmanship and respect in the game. The organisation’s commitment to upholding these values underscores the importance of creating a safe and inclusive space for all participants in youth sports.
As the case unfolds, questions arise about the role of parents in youth sports and the potential consequences of unchecked emotions in high-pressure situations. The incident serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of maintaining composure and respect, not only towards young athletes but also towards the officials who ensure fair play and safety on the ice.
The impact of this incident reverberates through the sporting community, prompting discussions on how to prevent such confrontations and uphold the integrity of youth sports. Moving forward, it is essential for parents, coaches, and players to prioritise sportsmanship and mutual respect, fostering a positive and supportive environment for all participants in recreational sports.
