A 14-year-old 8th grader, Mason Archibald, had a harrowing experience when he spent 21 hours lost in the backcountry of Idaho after getting separated from his group while snowmobiling on Saturday, Feb. 8. According to a report by the CBS affiliate KUTV, Mason was snowmobiling with his dad and family friends when he realized he was lost and got separated from the group.

The Franklin County Sheriff’s Office shared a statement on Facebook revealing that search and rescue teams worked tirelessly for nearly 24 hours to locate the missing teenager. Thankfully, Mason was found safe on Sunday, Feb. 9. Mason, who attends Bear River Middle School in Garland, Utah, shared that he initially panicked when he realised he was alone, but managed to regain his composure after crying and saying a few prayers.

The challenging conditions did not make Mason’s situation any easier. With temperatures as low as -15 degrees Fahrenheit and a storm dropping 10 to 12 inches of snow on the night he went missing, Mason had to navigate through harsh weather conditions. Despite the adversity, Mason persevered and even found a way to keep himself warm by making a resting space for himself.
Authorities mentioned that they were able to track Mason’s whereabouts through pings from his cell phone, although the device eventually succumbed to the cold and died. Meanwhile, Mason’s parents were filled with worry as the hours passed by. Mindi, Mason’s mother, expressed how the situation grew more terrifying as time went on, prompting her to seek help from volunteers online to aid in the search efforts for her son.
Fortunately, a volunteer discovered Mason in White Canyon on Sunday morning, bringing an end to the 21 hours he spent alone in the backcountry. Despite the ordeal, Mason did not suffer from frostbite, much to the relief of his parents. The family expressed their gratitude for the prayers and support they received during the challenging time.
In a heartwarming reunion, Mason was eventually reunited with his parents at a local hospital, where doctors were amazed by his resilience in the face of such harsh conditions. The community’s outpouring of support and the successful rescue serve as a reminder of the importance of coming together in times of need.
This story of survival and resilience showcases the strength of the human spirit, as Mason’s determination to make it through the night alone in the backcountry serves as an inspiration to all who hear about his remarkable experience. Through the combined efforts of search and rescue teams, volunteers, and the unwavering support of his family, Mason’s story has a happy ending, highlighting the power of community and positivity in the face of adversity.
