A former paraprofessional at Brady Exploration School in Lakewood, Colorado, has been sentenced to four years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting a 16-year-old student with special needs. Imagine Kay Ewer, 28, admitted to the crime as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, acknowledging the charges of sexual assault on a child by someone in a position of trust and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.

The sentencing, which took place on January 31, also included Ewer being ordered to undergo probation in the Sex Offender Intensive Supervision program for ten years to life. During the court proceedings, the victim’s mother expressed her anguish, stating that Ewer had manipulated her son into believing that she cared for him, while exploiting him for money and coercing him with dangerous requests.
According to Special Victims Prosecutor Brynn Chase, Ewer not only introduced the victim to fentanyl but also bombarded him with thousands of text messages, urging him to bring a gun to their sexual encounters. Shockingly, Ewer even instructed the student to bring the gun to school and shoot a faculty member in the leg. The crime came to light in November 2023, when a teacher discovered inappropriate material on the student’s assignment.
Subsequent investigations revealed a pattern of inappropriate behaviour, including evidence of frequent sexual encounters, constant digital communication, derogatory remarks directed at the victim, and the introduction of drugs, alcohol, and weapons into their interactions. Ewer, who had been employed by Jefferson County Public Schools in various roles, was arrested in January 2024 and faced charges including sexual assault on a child, sexual exploitation of a child, unlawful electronic sexual communication, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Throughout the sentencing, Ewer expressed remorse, apologising to the victim and their family. However, her attorney declined to provide further comment on the case. The victim’s family, devastated by the betrayal of trust, emphasised that had they been aware of the abuse, they would have never allowed Ewer to have such close access to their child.
Cases like these underscore the importance of vigilance and safeguarding vulnerable individuals, particularly those with special needs. The disturbing nature of this incident serves as a reminder of the responsibilities that educators and professionals working with young people carry, and the paramount need for stringent safeguards and oversight in educational environments.
The prosecution and sentencing of individuals who breach the trust placed in them by the community are crucial steps towards upholding justice and ensuring the safety of all students. While this case has resulted in a significant prison sentence for the perpetrator, it also highlights the long-lasting impact that such crimes can have on victims and their families.
This incident sheds light on the vulnerabilities present in educational settings and the critical need for proactive measures to prevent and address cases of abuse and exploitation. By prioritising the well-being and safety of students, schools can create a secure environment conducive to learning and growth, free from the threat of harm and misconduct. The community’s response to such cases plays a vital role in holding perpetrators accountable and supporting victims on their path to healing and justice.
Instances of abuse within educational institutions serve as a stark reminder of the duty of care owed to students and the imperative of maintaining safe and nurturing environments for young people to thrive. The consequences of such abuses reverberate far beyond the immediate individuals involved, underscoring the collective responsibility to uphold integrity and protect the welfare of all members of the community.
This case highlights the importance of robust systems for detecting and responding to signs of abuse, as well as the critical role of swift and decisive action in safeguarding vulnerable individuals. Through ongoing vigilance, education, and advocacy, communities can work together to prevent such tragedies and ensure that educational spaces remain sanctuaries of learning, trust, and respect.
