In a wealthy suburb of Indianapolis, Herb Baumeister led a seemingly quiet family life in the 1990s. Living in the Fox Hollow Farm estate in Westfield with his wife and three children, Baumeister also managed successful thrift stores. However, beneath this facade, authorities discovered a darker side to him. Baumeister was revealed to have targeted gay men at nightclubs, bringing them back to his home where he murdered and buried them on his sprawling property.

Baumeister’s disturbing crimes, believed to make him one of Indiana’s most prolific serial killers, are the focal point of a gripping four-part series titled ‘The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer’. Produced by One Traveler, an All3Media Company, for ABC News Studios, the series delves into the investigation led by Hamilton County coroner Jeff Jellison. Using advanced DNA technology, Jellison worked to identify the 10,000 human bones and fragments discovered at Baumeister’s farm, many of which had been burnt and crushed.
The 1994 revelation that shattered Baumeister’s secret life occurred when his 13-year-old son stumbled upon a human skull and bones in the woods surrounding Fox Hollow Farm. Despite Baumeister’s claim that the bones belonged to a medical skeleton from his father’s days as an anesthesiologist, further investigations unearthed thousands of human remains on the property. Before the authorities could apprehend him, Baumeister was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Canada at the age of 49. It was only in 1999 that police were able to identify eight of his victims.
Although Baumeister’s case had stalled, Jellison reignited efforts in 2022 to identify more victims using genetic genealogy and DNA technology. Through this renewed investigation, two more victims, Jeffrey Jones and Allen Livingston, were identified in 2024 and 2025 respectively. Authorities suspect Baumeister in the murders of at least 11 boys and men initially linked to the mysterious “I-70 Strangler”. The series features interviews with Baumeister survivor Mark Goodyear, investigators, relatives of the victims, and the current owner of Fox Hollow Farm.
‘The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer’ offers a haunting insight into Baumeister’s heinous crimes and the enduring impact on the victims’ families and the community. Premiering on Hulu on February 18, the series serves as a stark reminder of the importance of bringing justice and closure to the victims of such horrendous crimes. The legacy of this case continues to prompt advancements in forensic technology to ensure that the perpetrators of such atrocities are brought to account for their actions.
The gripping narrative of Baumeister’s concealed life and the subsequent uncovering of his crimes provides viewers with a chilling yet essential reflection on the pursuit of justice and the resilience of those affected by such tragedies. As the series premieres on Hulu, viewers will be drawn into a world fraught with darkness, but illuminated by the tireless efforts of those seeking truth and closure amidst the shadows of the past.
