President Donald Trump has recently made a controversial move by signing an executive order in support of plastic drinking straws, opposing the Biden administration’s initiatives to phase out single-use plastics. The executive order, which was signed on Monday, February 10, aims to encourage the US government and the public to revert to using plastic straws instead of paper ones.
According to Trump’s administration, paper straws were described in the executive order as “nonfunctional” and more expensive to produce than plastic alternatives. The order also highlighted that paper straws are sometimes individually wrapped in plastic, which undermines the environmental argument for their use. As a result, government agencies have been directed to stop procuring paper straws and cease providing them within agency buildings.

In a statement to reporters after signing the executive order, Trump expressed his belief that plastic straws would not significantly impact marine life, stating, “I don’t think plastic is going to affect a shark very much, as they’re munching their way through the ocean.” The president had hinted at the executive order on social media days before, announcing his intention to reverse the Biden administration’s push for paper straws.
Trump’s latest executive order is part of a broader effort to roll back environmental commitments made by the previous administration, including the decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Agreement. The Biden administration had set a goal to eliminate single-use plastics across all federal agencies and operations by 2035, a target that has now been overturned by Trump’s recent order.

Over the years, there has been a growing global movement to reduce the consumption of plastic straws due to their detrimental impact on the environment. Plastic waste, including straws, is a major contributor to ocean pollution, with projections indicating that by 2050, there may be more plastic in the ocean than fish. Despite these concerns, Trump has consistently voiced his opposition to bans on plastic straws, citing other larger sources of plastic waste that are often overlooked.
Notably, during his 2020 re-election campaign, Trump even launched his brand of reusable plastic straws. When questioned about his stance on plastic straws at the time, he emphasised the need to address more significant environmental issues beyond focusing solely on straws. With his recent executive order, Trump has once again asserted his preference for plastic over paper in the ongoing debate on environmental sustainability.
The debate surrounding the use of plastic versus paper straws continues to spark conversation and divide opinions on the best approach to mitigating plastic pollution. As environmental concerns remain at the forefront of global agendas, the implications of Trump’s executive order on the future of sustainability efforts in the US remain uncertain.
