A 6-year-old boy’s dramatic weight gain, which tragically led to a terminal diagnosis, has deeply impacted his family and community. Luke Poga, from Borehamwood, England, saw his weight double within a year, a concerning change that was initially attributed to a lack of physical activity during the Covid lockdown. However, this significant weight gain was not just a result of lifestyle changes but a symptom of a more serious underlying condition.

In 2020, at the young age of 6, Luke returned to school after lockdown wearing clothing meant for 11- and 12-year-olds, prompting comments from parents about his noticeable physical transformation. His mother, Sam, recalls that Luke was always slender, making this weight gain even more striking to those who knew him. Concerned about her son’s health, Sam sought advice from a nutritionist to address Luke’s changing body, but more alarming symptoms began to emerge.

Luke started to experience vision problems and discomfort in his eyes, leading his mother to seek medical attention. Following a visit to an eye doctor and subsequent MRI scan at the local hospital, the devastating truth was revealed – Luke had an aggressive glioma, a type of brain tumor. The news left his family in shock, especially as doctors explained the tumor’s size and complexity, rendering it inoperable.
Despite undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments, Luke’s condition deteriorated, and in early 2024, the family received the heartbreaking news that his cancer was terminal. Just a few months later, on August 26, 2024, Luke passed away at the tender age of 9. Tragically, another student from Luke’s school, Summerswood Primary School, also lost her life to a brain tumor, emphasizing the urgency of raising awareness and funds for research in this area.
In memory of Luke and the other young student, the Summerswood community has come together to support brain tumor research by initiating a fundraising campaign. The school committed to walking 10,000 steps daily throughout February to raise awareness and vital funds for Brain Tumour Research. This united effort aims to honour the memory of the two students and provide support to their grieving families during this difficult time.
Sam Poga, Luke’s mother, shared her thoughts on the initiative, expressing gratitude for the support received from the community. She highlighted that the fundraising challenge not only serves as a way to remember her son and the other student but also as a means to drive progress in finding improved treatments and ultimately a cure for this devastating disease. The solidarity and compassion shown by the Summerswood community underscore the power of coming together in times of loss and hardship.
The tragic story of Luke Poga serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of early detection and continued research into pediatric brain tumors. While his battle with cancer was met with immense challenges, the legacy he leaves behind through community support and fundraising efforts reflects a glimmer of hope amidst profound sorrow. As efforts to raise awareness and funds for brain tumor research continue, Luke’s memory lives on, inspiring others to join the fight against this devastating illness.
