A remarkable incident recently unfolded off the coast of Tenerife, as an elusive deep-sea fish mysteriously rose from the depths of the ocean in a rare occurrence captured on camera. The creature in question is a humpback anglerfish, scientifically known as Melanocetus johnsonii, which belongs to the species of black seadevil. This unprecedented event has left experts astounded as it may mark the first live sighting of this deep-sea fish in broad daylight near the water’s surface.

The mesmerising footage of the anglerfish swimming towards the ocean’s surface was shared by Condrik Tenerife researchers and photographer David Jara Boguñá in a joint Instagram post. Typically residing at depths ranging between 200 and 2,000 meters beneath the sea, the anglerfish’s rare appearance near the surface caught the researchers off guard while they were conducting a shark research project in the area.
Describing the sighting as potentially historic, Boguñá highlighted the significance of observing the black demon or adult abyssal anglerfish alive and in daylight. The reasons behind the fish’s presence in shallower waters remain uncertain, with speculations ranging from illness to escaping a predator. Nonetheless, the impact of this encounter on the research team is profound, ensuring it will be etched in their memory for years to come.
Historically, sightings of this deep-sea fish have been limited to images captured by submarines or washed-up specimens. The anglerfish may also be familiar to some through its depiction in popular culture, like its appearance in Disney’s “Finding Nemo” in 2003, where it pursued Marlin and Dory in the ocean’s depths. Marine biologist Laia Valor noted the unusual sighting, as the fish was discovered in a deteriorating condition before being preserved for further study at the Museum of Nature and Archaeology in Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
Despite the fish’s tragic fate, the sighting serves as a unique opportunity for researchers to delve deeper into understanding the behaviour and ecology of deep-sea creatures. Valor elaborated on the rarity of such sightings, emphasising the need for continued research and exploration to unravel the mysteries of these elusive beings residing in the ocean’s abyss.
The discovery of the humpback anglerfish rising to the ocean’s surface stands as a testament to the awe-inspiring wonders of the marine world. This incident not only sheds light on the enigmatic lives of deep-sea fish but also underscores the importance of conservation efforts to safeguard these creatures and their habitats. As researchers and enthusiasts alike marvel at this extraordinary event, the deep-sea continues to reveal its secrets, inviting us to explore and appreciate the beauty and mystery it holds.
In a world where exploration and discovery are constant pursuits, encounters like these serve as reminders of the untapped potential and endless wonders that lie beneath the ocean’s surface. As we strive to protect and preserve our marine ecosystems, each new revelation brings us closer to understanding the intricate balance and interconnectedness of life in the deep blue sea.
