Debris Matching Missing Plane with 10 Onboard Found in Alaska with 3 Bodies, Coast Guard Reports

In a tragic turn of events, the United States Coast Guard has confirmed the discovery of debris that matches the missing Bering Air plane that vanished outside of Nome, Alaska. The Coast Guard released a statement on social media, stating, “#USCG has located an aircraft matching the description of the missing plane approximately 34 miles southeast of Nome. 3 individuals were found inside and reported to be deceased. Our thoughts are with those affected by this tragic incident.”


The wreckage, as depicted in a photo shared by the Alaska U.S. Coast Guard, shows two rescuers navigating through the snow amidst the remnants of the plane, with the wing and tail visible. While three bodies have been located, the fate of the remaining seven passengers remains unknown. Cameron Snell, a spokesperson for the U.S. Coast Guard, mentioned that rescuers have not been able to fully access the plane and are continuing their search efforts.
The missing Bering Air Caravan flight, which was carrying 10 individuals, was reported overdue at approximately 4 p.m. local time on Thursday, Feb. 6, while en route from Unalakleet to Nome, according to initial reports from the Alaska Department of Public Safety (DPS). Authorities revealed during a press conference that the aircraft encountered an event around 3:18 p.m. that led to a sudden loss of elevation and speed.
The last known position of the plane was identified as being “in the vicinity of Norton Sound, approximately 30 miles southeast of Nome,” as stated by the U.S. Coast Guard in a news release. At the time of the incident, the aircraft was reportedly 12 miles offshore. The Nome Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) disclosed that the pilot had communicated with Anchorage Air Traffic Control about intending to enter a holding pattern while waiting for the runway to be cleared.
