A Temple University student is facing suspension and legal repercussions after allegedly pretending to be an agent from the U.S. Immigration and Enforcement Unit (ICE) on the university’s campus in North Philadelphia. The incident occurred on Saturday, Feb. 1, prompting the university to take swift action against the individual involved.

The student at the centre of the controversy has been identified as 22-year-old Aidan Steigelmann. Alongside two other accomplices, they were reportedly attempting to pass off as ICE agents while trying to gain entry into the Johnson and Hardwick Residence Halls. Their efforts were thwarted when they were denied access, as reported by CBS News Philadelphia.
Following their unsuccessful attempt, Steigelmann and the others were spotted engaging in a conversation before swiftly leaving the scene in a Jaguar SUV. Not long after, around 10 minutes later, authorities received reports that Steigelmann and one of the other suspects were donning shirts bearing the labels “Police” and “ICE,” causing disruption on the premises, with the third accomplice recording the unfolding events.
The trio was eventually located by investigators who utilised the footage to track down the Jaguar SUV. Subsequently, at 10 p.m., Steigelmann was taken into custody by the police on the 1700 block of North 12th Street. He now faces charges of impersonating a public servant and was promptly placed on an interim suspension by the university following the incident on Sunday, Feb. 2.
In response to the actions of the student, Temple University issued a statement expressing their intolerance for such behaviour, highlighting that impersonating law enforcement officials is a criminal offence and will not be tolerated within the university community. The university’s Student Conduct Code will be enforced, with potential disciplinary actions, including expulsion, for those found responsible.
This incident comes on the heels of a previous statement released by the university on Jan. 29, emphasising that neither the Temple Department of Public Safety nor the Philadelphia Police Department had any record of federal ICE agents being present on campus. The arrest of Steigelmann serves as a firm reminder of the consequences of engaging in such deceptive and unlawful activities.
Temple University Police (TUPD) and the Philadelphia Police Department (PPD) are currently conducting an investigation into the incident to ensure that appropriate measures are taken. Anyone with relevant information is urged to reach out to Temple Police through Investigations@temple.edu or by calling 215-204-1234.
As the situation continues to unfold, representatives for both the Philadelphia Police Department and Temple University have not yet provided additional details in response to inquiries from PEOPLE. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding law and order on university premises, emphasising the consequences of impersonating law enforcement officials.
The involvement of a Temple University student in such unlawful conduct has raised concerns within the university community and underscores the need for vigilance in upholding the law. The incident serves as a cautionary tale against engaging in deceptive behaviours that undermine the integrity and safety of educational institutions.
In the wake of this incident, Temple University remains committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of its students, faculty, and staff. The university’s swift response to the impersonation incident reflects its zero-tolerance policy towards actions that compromise the security and trust within the campus community.
As the investigation progresses, it is crucial for all members of the university community to adhere to ethical standards and respect the law enforcement authorities tasked with maintaining order on campus. In the pursuit of justice and accountability, Temple University is steadfast in upholding its values and fostering a safe environment for all who are part of the institution.
