Captain Jason Chambers from Below Deck Down Under recently shared his melanoma journey exclusively with PEOPLE, revealing his feelings of embarrassment and regret for not being more careful in the sun. In a candid interview, Chambers expressed his shock at being diagnosed with melanoma in December after noticing changes in a sunspot on his left side. He recounted, “I had a little spot there for many years, but it kind of changed colour and someone told me I should get it checked out.”

Melanoma, as defined by The Mayo Clinic, is a type of skin cancer that develops from skin cells exposed to sunlight, particularly the sun’s harmful UV rays. Despite his background of working on the water and his Australian heritage, Chambers admitted feeling naive for not fully understanding the dangers of skin cancer. He remarked, “I actually didn’t know the severity of skin cancer and I thought that I was immune to it. I kind of look back at myself and go, really?”

Following a biopsy and diagnosis, Chambers, at 52, delved into research about skin cancer, leading to a realization of the importance of sun protection. The CDC warns that unprotected skin can be damaged by UV rays in as little as 15 minutes, with Australia having one of the highest rates of melanoma globally. Chambers underwent two procedures to remove the cancer, with doctors providing positive feedback on his prognosis and a low chance of recurrence.
Reflecting on his health scare, Chambers has become more conscious of protecting himself and his loved ones from the sun. He now diligently follows Australia’s ‘slip, slop, slap’ campaign, advocating for sun-protective clothing, sunscreen application, and wearing hats. His 10-year-old daughter, Saskia, is also benefitting from his newfound vigilance towards sun safety.
The melanoma battle prompted Chambers to focus not only on physical health but also on mental well-being, especially following a challenging year involving personal hardships. He shared his commitment to improving mental health through therapy and hiring a manifesting coach. Embracing holistic well-being, he incorporates daily walks, yoga stretches, ice baths, and sauna sessions into his routine.
Looking ahead, Chambers aims to achieve his best self by prioritising a balanced lifestyle and positive mindset. His resilience and determination serve as an inspiration as he navigates post-melanoma life with a renewed perspective on health and vitality.
