The incident occurred on the evening of January 31 near Roosevelt Mall at Cottman and Bustleton Avenues in Northeast Philadelphia. A medical transportation jet, carrying six individuals including a mother, her daughter, and four crew members, crashed shortly after takeoff from Northeast Philadelphia Airport. Tragically, all six people on board the plane lost their lives in the crash, which was bound for Springfield-Branson National Airport in Missouri with a final destination in Mexico.
Andre was inside a car with his siblings and father when the crash happened, leading to debris flying in all directions. His quick thinking and protective instinct kicked in as he shielded his sister from harm, ultimately sustaining injuries himself. With a piece of metal sticking out of his head from the plane, Andre’s father recounted the harrowing experience and the moment his son’s courageous actions became apparent.

Despite the severity of his injuries, Andre received immediate medical attention, including surgery at Jefferson Torresdale Hospital. Doctors initially expressed doubts about his prognosis, but the young boy was later transferred to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia where he has shown signs of improvement. His family set up a GoFundMe page to cover medical expenses, rehabilitation, and ongoing treatment, acknowledging the challenges ahead but remaining hopeful for Andre’s recovery.

The community rallied around Andre and his family, recognising the young boy’s bravery and resilience in the face of adversity. Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker provided updates on the crash, noting that 24 people were injured, with four individuals still hospitalised, including two in critical condition. The incident left a profound impact on all those involved, prompting an outpouring of support and well-wishes for Andre’s continued healing.
As Andre continues his recovery journey, his mother, LaShawn Hamiel, expressed gratitude for the support received during this difficult time. With heartfelt appreciation for the kindness and generosity shown towards her son, she remains hopeful for his continued progress and eventual return to health. The story of Andre Howard’s bravery serves as a reminder of the innate courage and selflessness that can emerge even in the most challenging circumstances, inspiring others to stand strong in the face of adversity.
