A 14-year-old boy, Alex Costa-Veiga, faced a devastating diagnosis after experiencing symptoms that were initially mistaken for anxiety related to changing schools. The teenager was eventually diagnosed with a medulloblastoma, a type of cancerous brain tumour that required surgical intervention.
According to reports from the Brain Tumour Research charity in England, Alex had been dealing with issues such as morning sickness, vomiting, and balance problems for over a year before his diagnosis. The charity revealed that his symptoms were initially thought to be linked to anxiety over transitioning to a new school.

When Alex’s symptoms persisted and became more severe, his concerned mother, Melanie Costa-Veiga, sought medical help for her son. Despite multiple visits to general practitioners, blood tests, and consultations with paediatricians, the tumour in his brain remained undetected.
Melanie shared her concerns, stating that Alex had previously been in good health until he started experiencing morning sickness and other troubling symptoms. Initially attributing these issues to anxiety surrounding the school change, she realised that further investigation was needed as the symptoms continued to worsen.
Doctors explored various possibilities, including gastrointestinal problems and food intolerances, but were unable to pinpoint the cause of Alex’s symptoms. It wasn’t until he mentioned experiencing double vision in December 2023 that they began to suspect something more serious.
Following a referral to an eye clinic and subsequent CT scan, Alex was rushed to Birmingham Children’s Hospital for further evaluation. It was there that the true extent of his condition was revealed, leaving Melanie reeling with shock and helplessness.
In late December 2023, Alex underwent a 10-hour surgery to remove the tumour, with additional procedures required in the following days to address complications and ensure his brain function. The family received the news that Alex’s cancer had spread, but medical professionals remained hopeful about his prospects for successful treatment.
Despite facing numerous challenges in his recovery journey, including speech and mobility issues, Alex has shown remarkable resilience and determination. He has undergone extensive treatment, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy sessions, with ongoing monitoring to track his progress.
Melanie emphasised the toll that the treatments have taken on her son, highlighting the need for better alternatives for young patients like Alex. Despite the hardships faced by the family, she expressed gratitude for every small victory and the unwavering support they have received throughout this difficult time.
As Alex continues his rehabilitation and adjusts to life post-surgery, his family remains hopeful for his future. Despite the challenges ahead, they are determined to celebrate each milestone in his recovery and cherish the moments of strength and courage displayed by Alex throughout his ordeal.
The story of Alex’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity. It highlights the importance of timely and accurate medical interventions and the need for increased awareness and research into conditions such as medulloblastoma.
Through their unwavering support and determination, Alex and his family remain beacons of hope and inspiration for others facing similar challenges. As they navigate the road to recovery together, they serve as a testament to the power of love, resilience, and community in overcoming life’s toughest battles.
