The father of two, Scott Muir, found himself in a life-threatening situation when he was surfing in California and had a wipeout that left him partially paralyzed. This incident occurred on Sunday, Sept. 28, while he was enjoying the waves with his childhood friend Dan Pierson. Muir expressed his gratitude from his hospital bed to the fellow surfers who came to his rescue during the near-fatal incident.

Describing the moment of the wipeout, Muir said, “I just felt a crunch.” The wave hit him on the head and the sand, leaving him face down underwater. Despite facing the possibility of a grim outcome, Muir was pulled from the tide by 19-year-old Judah Ely. Ely, along with his friend Thomas Alspaugh, spotted Muir in distress and sprung into action to save him.

Muir shared his harrowing experience of being tossed by three waves and being pulled towards the ocean floor, struggling to stay afloat. Thanks to the quick thinking and bravery of Ely and Alspaugh, Muir was rescued and taken to safety. The lifeguards on duty at Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton also played a crucial role in ensuring Muir received immediate medical attention.

Following the incident, Muir has been fighting to regain mobility in his shoulders, left arm, and left leg. While he still faces challenges with his right hand and leg, he remains grateful for being alive. His wife, Kristen, who received the news of the accident while sipping coffee at home, rushed to the hospital to be by his side.
The road to recovery for Muir involves spending months at an inpatient spinal cord injury rehabilitation hospital in Colorado. Despite the uncertainties surrounding his recovery timeline, Muir’s family and loved ones remain optimistic and inspired by his determination and positivity throughout this challenging period.
Reflecting on the ordeal, Muir expressed his deep love for the ocean, emphasizing its healing properties both mentally and spiritually for him. He looks forward to getting back into the water and engaging in activities like surfing, paddling, and diving once again. Muir’s resilience and unwavering spirit serve as a beacon of hope for his family and all those rooting for his full recovery.
