Jen Affleck recently shared some valuable insights in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE about her experiences and the advice she would give to her younger self. The 26-year-old MomToker, who has been candid about her struggles with prenatal and postpartum depression, opened up after a heartfelt performance on Dancing with the Stars’ Dedication Night alongside her mother, Maria.

During the interview, Jen expressed gratitude for her mother’s wisdom, stating, “She’s given me a lot of advice… probably just to stay strong, keep your head up, and always be grateful for what you have, and be grateful for those around, grateful for those in your life and everyone around you because you never know if one day you’re going to have to say goodbye. She’s just always reminded me to count my blessings.”

Reflecting on her challenging year dealing with mental health issues while filming The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, Jen revealed that she would advise her past self that “it gets better.” She emphasized the importance of holding on and believing that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
In her interview with PEOPLE, Jen shared, “I would tell that version of myself that it gets better and that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. You just keep holding on. Everything will work out, and clearly it did because here I am on Dancing with the Stars.”
The opportunity to dance with her mother on such a public platform was a dream come true for Jen. She expressed how special it was for both of them, especially since it was her mother’s first time performing in front of a live audience. The emotional experience resonated with both Jen and her mother, as well as their dance partner, Jan Ravnik.
Partner Jan Ravnik also shared his emotional reaction to the performance, stating, “For me, it’s just like her mom is also foreign in this country and her story, and I related because I’m foreign and I left my family back in the home, so I think that was just very overwhelming for me at the same time.” The shared experience brought tears to his eyes, highlighting the powerful connection between the dancers.
Looking ahead, Jen and Jan are gearing up for their next performance on Dancing with the Stars during Wicked week. Their journey on the show continues as they strive to give their best on the dance floor. Viewers can catch Dancing with the Stars on Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC and Disney+.
As Jen Affleck embraces the challenges and triumphs of her journey, her resilience and openness serve as an inspiration to many who may be facing similar struggles. Her story is a reminder of the importance of perseverance, gratitude, and the support of loved ones during difficult times.
