A 59-year-old man was reportedly kidnapped and taken on a harrowing journey spanning more than 600 miles before being rescued in Sydney, according to a recent news report. The man had arranged to meet the group at a restaurant on April 2 to discuss a payment of $40,000 to $50,000 for cryptocurrency from his friend ‘Craig.’ However, when the payment did not go through by the following evening, tensions rose. The group then went to the man’s residence as he was entering his Lexus car, compelled him to exit, and coerced him into transferring $2,600 to a specific account. Subsequently, they forced the man into the back of his Lexus, physically assaulted him, and decided to take him on a journey to Sydney to resolve the situation, according to police accounts cited by the Herald.
Despite the man’s refusal and fear for his family’s safety, he complied under duress and embarked on the extensive trip with the group. The kidnappers allegedly threatened him with violence towards him and his wife if he did not cooperate. The victim, left with no choice, joined one of the men in his Lexus, while the others trailed in a Mercedes-Benz. As the situation escalated, the man managed to seek help at a gas station stop approximately 50 miles southeast of Adelaide. Pretending to purchase cigarettes for the group, he alerted the shop attendant about his abduction, triggering a prompt response from the New South Wales Police and initiating an investigation. Police surveillance footage captured both vehicles, the Lexus and Mercedes-Benz, speeding through various locations in New South Wales, facilitating the subsequent interception of the Mercedes-Benz and the arrest of two suspects inside.
Moreover, law enforcement swiftly intercepted the Lexus, discovering 21-year-old Kitione Mahe, a previously sought individual, in the front passenger’s seat alongside another accomplice and the injured 59-year-old victim.
