An elderly man with autism recently had an emotional reunion with the first responders who played a crucial role in saving his life during a heart attack at a picnic in New York. Lenny Muzzillo, a 73-year-old attendee at the Brookhaven Town Senior Picnic on September 3, suffered from cardiac arrest while engaging in a joyous activity. Reports from ABC affiliate WABC-TV and the New York Post highlighted the heroic efforts of the officers who performed life-saving CPR on Muzzillo before medical help arrived.

The dramatic events unfolded as Muzzillo, known as a “ladies man,” was cheerfully dancing with two women just moments before the sudden cardiac arrest. The swift response of officers, including a Suffolk County sheriff’s deputy and two correction officers, kept Muzzillo alive through their prompt administration of CPR. A heartwarming reunion took place on October 7, as Muzzillo met with the officers who selflessly came to his aid, as detailed by the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO).

Expressing his gratitude during the emotional reunion, Muzzillo acknowledged the rarity of meeting those who directly contributed to saving his life. His sister, Diane Summerfold, referred to the officers as “angels on earth,” highlighting the immense impact of their timely intervention. Officer Sean Higgins and Deputy Sheriff Dylan Hever recounted the harrowing experience of performing chest compressions on Muzzillo, with Officer Travis Yacovone coordinating the emergency response. Having endured 11 days in two separate hospitals, Muzzillo underwent a quadruple bypass surgery to address the severe blockages in his heart. Reflecting on his near-death experience, Muzzillo expressed his profound relief at still being alive and cherished the opportunity to personally thank his lifesavers.
