Mark Hoppus, the renowned artist from Blink-182, is making headlines as he prepares to part ways with his treasured Banksy painting. The iconic piece, named “Crude Oil (Vettriano)” by Banksy from 2005, is set to go under the hammer, with estimates suggesting it could fetch a staggering sum of up to $6.3 million at an upcoming auction in London, hosted by Sotheby’s.

Hoppus, 52, has been the proud owner of this Banksy masterpiece since 2011. The artwork is a unique reinterpretation by the elusive British street artist of the timeless 1992 piece “The Singing Butler” by Jack Vettriano. It portrays a couple donned in evening wear on a beach, juxtaposed against a sinking oil tanker in the background, flanked by individuals in hazmat suits hauling a barrel of hazardous waste onto shore.
The rockstar shared, “My wife Skye and I fell in love with this painting instantly when we first laid eyes on it.” Over the years, the painting has graced their residences in both Los Angeles and London, adding a touch of creativity and intrigue to their living spaces.
Sotheby’s, the auction house overseeing the sale, has projected the bidding for this artwork to range between $3.7 million and $6.3 million. Hoppus has expressed his intention to utilise the proceeds from the sale to invest in the works of emerging artists, fostering and supporting artistic talent within the creative community.
Moreover, Hoppus has disclosed plans to donate a portion of the proceeds to several charitable organisations, including the California Fire Foundation, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, and Cedars Sinai Hematology Oncology Research. His battle with lymphoma in April 2021, followed by a triumphant declaration of being cancer-free five months later, serves as a poignant reminder of his resilience and generosity.
Described by Sotheby’s as a masterpiece that embodies Banksy’s prowess as a cultural provocateur and astute social commentator, “Crude Oil” is hailed as an audacious and instantly recognisable work in the artist’s thought-provoking body of art. The piece was unveiled as part of Banksy’s 2005 exhibition titled “Crude Oils: A Gallery of Re-mixed Masterpieces, Vandalism, and Vermin,” alongside his reinterpretations of renowned paintings like Edward Hopper’s “Nighthawks” and Vincent Van Gogh’s “Sunflowers.”
In a statement provided by Sotheby’s, Hoppus drew parallels between street art and his passion for skateboarding, emphasising the DIY spirit shared by both creative avenues. He reflected on his formative years, where he and his peers in the skating community dabbled in designing T-shirts and screen-printing independently, driven by a sense of self-reliance and ingenuity.
The forthcoming sale of this prized Banksy painting serves as a testament to Hoppus’s unwavering support for the arts, his resilience in the face of adversity, and his commitment to giving back to the community. As the auction date draws near, art enthusiasts and fans alike eagerly await the outcome, anticipating a memorable chapter in the journey of this beloved musician and philanthropist.
