A South Carolina community recently came together to honour the memory of a young boy, Jaysen Carr, who tragically passed away at the age of 12 after contracting a rare brain-eating amoeba. Jaysen had been looking forward to celebrating his 13th birthday, and in his honour, his family and friends gathered to remember him in a heartfelt celebration.

Jaysen’s mother, Ebony Carr, shared with CBS affiliate WLTX that her son had always wanted a birthday party for his 13th birthday. Despite his absence, the family decided to fulfil his wish and hold the celebration. Jaysen’s life was cut short on July 18 after he contracted Naeglaria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, while swimming in Lake Murray. The amoeba, although rare, is known to cause a devastating infection called primary amebic meningoencephalitis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that Naeglaria fowleri is found in warm freshwater bodies like lakes and rivers. Jaysen’s parents expressed shock over the situation, as they were unaware of the risks associated with swimming in the lake. They emphasised that had they known about the potential dangers, they would have never allowed Jaysen to swim there.

Jaysen, described as wise beyond his years, was a beloved student-athlete at Hand Middle School. He excelled in both basketball and football, while also being an honour student. Known for his kindness, respect, and leadership qualities, Jaysen touched the hearts of everyone he encountered. To honour his legacy, his family established the Be A Good Human Foundation, which aims to support a scholarship for a student-athlete at Dreher High School.
On Jaysen’s 13th birthday, his family and friends gathered at Altitude Trampoline Park, a place he cherished, wearing Team Jaysen T-shirts as a tribute. The event aimed to not only celebrate Jaysen’s life but also serve as a reminder of the importance of unity and kindness within the community. Thomas Pohlmann, a close friend of Jaysen, emphasised his vibrant energy and the positive impact he had on those around him.
Clarence Carr, Jaysen’s father, highlighted the significance of treating others with respect and coming together as a community. The Carr family stressed the importance of being good humans and spreading positivity, especially during challenging times. The celebration served as a poignant reminder of the impact Jaysen had during his short but meaningful life.
The tragic loss of Jaysen Carr has deeply affected the Columbia community, as friends, neighbours, and classmates continue to mourn his passing. Despite the sorrow felt by many, the celebration of Jaysen’s life brought a sense of unity and shared memories. The legacy of kindness and love that Jaysen left behind will continue to inspire those who knew him.
Remembering Jaysen Carr’s infectious spirit and his dedication to being a good human, his family and community rallied together to commemorate his life and the positive impact he had on those around him. As they continue to navigate their grief, the Carr family hopes to uphold Jaysen’s values of kindness and generosity, keeping his memory alive through acts of goodwill and community support.
In a time of great sadness and loss, the South Carolina community stands united in honouring Jaysen Carr, a remarkable young boy whose legacy will forever live on in the hearts of those who knew him.
