João Marinho Neto, the world’s oldest man, marked a significant milestone as he turned 113 years old on October 5th this year. This remarkable occasion was commemorated with a joyous birthday celebration surrounded by his loved ones. Hailing from Brazil, Neto’s longevity has been recognised by Guinness World Records, naming him as the oldest man in the world since November 2024.

Born on October 5, 1912, in Maranguape, a town in the Brazilian state of Ceará, Neto holds the title of being the last surviving man from his birth year. His longevity has positioned him as the 26th oldest man in history, according to Guinness World Records. Emphasising the significance of positive relationships, Neto disclosed his secret to a long and fulfilling life as being surrounded by good people and keeping his loved ones close by.

Neto, who had already been acknowledged as the oldest living man in Latin America, gained his official recognition as the oldest man in the world following the passing of John Tinniswood from the United Kingdom when he was 112 years and 52 days old. A man of humble beginnings, Neto grew up in a family of farmers and started working alongside his father in the fields from the tender age of 4.
Having enriched his life with experiences, Neto has fathered a total of seven children with two partners. He welcomed his first four children, Antônio, José, Fátima, and Vanda, with his first wife, Josefa Albano dos Santos. Subsequently, with partner Antonia Rodrigues Moura, he had three more children—Vinícius, Jarbas, and Conceição. Remarkably, six of Neto’s eight children are alive today, along with 22 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren.
Neto’s significant birthday celebration comes hot on the heels of his fellow record-holder, Ethel Caterham, turning 116 years old. Caterham, who holds the title of the oldest living person, resides in the U.K. The heartwarming connection between the world’s oldest woman and man was evident when Neto extended birthday greetings to Caterham, highlighting a unique and heartening exchange between supercentenarians from different corners of the globe.
Throughout the years, Neto has embodied resilience, vitality, and a deep connection with his family that has undoubtedly contributed to his longevity. His story serves as an inspiration, showcasing the importance of cherished relationships and a positive outlook on life. As Neto continues to defy age and revel in the love of his family, his journey stands as a testament to the beauty of a life well-lived.
In a world where achievements are often fleeting, the enduring legacy of João Marinho Neto resonates as a beacon of hope and a reminder of the precious moments shared with those we hold dear. As Neto continues to bask in the love and warmth of his family and friends, his unwavering spirit and zest for life continue to inspire generations to come.
