Seven Chilean nationals have been charged in connection with burglaries at the homes of professional athletes, including Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce. The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Middle District Florida announced that Sergio Ortega Cabello, Bastian Jimenez Freraut, Pablo Zuniga Cartes, Alexander Huiaguil Chavez, Bastian Orellano Morales, Jordan Quiroga Sanchez, and Ignacio Zuniga Cartes are facing charges related to conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen property. It is believed that these individuals were part of a group that specifically targeted high-profile athletes from the NFL and NBA. The FBI investigators revealed that the theft group assigned specific roles to its members, including renting vehicles, securing temporary accommodations, obtaining fraudulent identification, and contacting buyers for the stolen items. The authorities were able to identify and track down the group through search warrants, subpoenaed records, and other collected evidence. The burglaries at the homes of Mahomes and Kelce occurred within a span of 48 hours in October 2024. Mahomes’ residence in Belton, Missouri, was broken into around midnight on October 5, with no visible signs of forced entry reported by the police. Less than two days later, during a Chiefs’ game against the New Orleans Saints at Arrowhead Stadium, Kelce’s 17,000-square-foot home in Leawood, Kansas, was also burglarized.

The thieves reportedly stole various items, including jewellery, watches, cash, and luxury merchandise from the homes of both Kansas City Chiefs players. Additionally, the complaint mentioned that a player from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had their home burglarized while the team played in their home city in October 2024. Another incident involved the Wisconsin home of a Milwaukee Bucks player being targeted in November 2024, resulting in the theft of jewellery, designer watches, luxury bags, and a firearm. The criminal activities extended to December 2024, with players from the Cincinnati Bengals and Memphis Grizzlies being victims of similar burglaries, leading to substantial losses in stolen goods.
The charged individuals were found to have been involved in high-value thefts across various states, indicating a sophisticated criminal operation targeting affluent individuals. The U.S. Attorney’s Office shared photos of the thieves posing with the stolen items, highlighting the audacity and organised nature of their criminal activities. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of robust security measures, especially for public figures and those in the sports industry. This incident underscores the need for enhanced vigilance and protection, both at home and while travelling, to prevent such targeted burglaries in the future.
The investigation into these burglaries sheds light on the challenges faced by law enforcement in combating organised crime groups operating across state lines. The collaboration between federal agencies, local law enforcement, and prosecutors was instrumental in identifying and apprehending the individuals involved in these sophisticated thefts. The charges brought against the seven Chilean nationals represent a significant step towards holding accountable those responsible for these crimes and seeking justice for the victims. The impact of these burglaries goes beyond the material losses incurred by the athletes and serves as a stark reminder of the security risks faced by individuals in the public eye. Moving forward, it is essential for authorities and private individuals alike to remain vigilant and work together to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The detailed planning and execution of these burglaries suggest a level of sophistication and coordination that requires a concerted effort to dismantle such criminal networks. The stolen valuables, including high-end jewellery, watches, and designer items, underscore the lucrative nature of these illegal activities and the need for stringent measures to combat them effectively. As the legal proceedings progress, it is hoped that justice will be served, and measures will be put in place to enhance security protocols and prevent future breaches of privacy and safety. The impact of these incidents extends beyond the financial losses suffered by the victims, highlighting the broader implications of targeted crimes and the importance of robust security measures in safeguarding personal assets and well-being.
