A remarkable discovery unfolded as a group of beachgoers stumbled upon a rare oarfish swimming near Playa El Quemado in Baja California Sur, Mexico. The oarfish, also known as the “doomsday fish,” was spotted on Sunday, Feb. 9, as captured in a video by Robert Hayes and shared with PEOPLE. In the footage, the long and vibrant fish can be seen struggling in the water, prompting astonishment among the onlookers.

The onlookers were in awe, with one man exclaiming, “That’s an oarfish. Holy sh–, they’ve almost never been seen live.” Expressing disbelief, he added, “Nobody’s gonna believe this,” as they observed the unusual creature. Hayes recounted how the oarfish approached them, with its head protruding above the water by about two inches. Despite attempts to guide it back into the water, the fish persistently returned each time, leading them to suspect it might have been injured.
The Ocean Conservancy highlights the rarity of human encounters with oarfish, as these deep-sea dwellers are typically not found close to the surface. Encountering an oarfish near shore could indicate its ill health or disorientation. Legend has it that the oarfish, dubbed the “doomsday fish,” may foretell disasters such as earthquakes. Notably, prior instances of multiple oarfish sightings preceded significant seismic events, hinting at a mysterious connection.
Ben Frable, manager of the Scripps Oceanography Marine Vertebrate Collection, suggests that oarfish washing ashore could signal changes in ocean conditions and an uptick in oarfish populations along the coast. This phenomenon may be linked to broader environmental shifts, although specific triggers like the El Niño and La Niña cycle could play a role. The frequencies of these occurrences underscore the need for continued research and monitoring of marine ecosystems.
The recent appearance of an oarfish in Mexico adds to a series of such sightings along the California coastline. These elusive creatures, with their symbolic significance and ominous reputation, have intrigued scientists and locals alike. Engaging with the natural world in unexpected ways serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of all life forms and the mysteries that still abound in our oceans.
As communities witness the emergence of these enigmatic deep-sea creatures in coastal waters, the question of their significance and implications lingers. The allure of the oarfish, with its storied past and elusive nature, continues to captivate those fortunate enough to encounter it firsthand. Such encounters offer a glimpse into the hidden depths of the ocean and spark curiosity about the intricate ecosystems that sustain life beneath the waves.
Amidst the wonder and speculation surrounding the oarfish, its presence serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility and interconnectedness of our planet’s ecosystems. As researchers delve deeper into the mysteries of these magnificent creatures, the quest for understanding and conservation efforts become increasingly vital. The unexpected appearance of the “doomsday fish” on the shores of Mexico prompts reflection on our relationship with the natural world and the need to cherish and protect its wonders for future generations.
