According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Highway Patrol, the harrowing incident unfolded when officers received a call about a vehicle driving the wrong way on the interstate. A deputy then witnessed the vehicle crossing the median in the wrong direction, before self-correcting and continuing at an excessive speed.
The vehicle, which had been reported as stolen and fled from the Flagstaff Police Department prior to the crash, veered onto a guardrail and rolled several times before finally coming to a halt in a tree. The impact of the crash was so severe that the steering wheel broke off and flew approximately 50 feet from the scene of the accident.
Upon further investigation, it was revealed that the driver of the vehicle was a 13-year-old, while an 11-year-old was in the passenger seat.
