Two men accused of impersonating utility workers and perpetrating a violent invasion that resulted in the death of a 72-year-old man in Michigan are now facing trial. The court proceedings started this week in Oakland County, where a decision was made to have two separate juries – one for each defendant. This allows both defendants, Carlos Hernandez and Joshua Zuazo, to be tried simultaneously but with separate deliberations, as reported by ClickOnDetroit, the Oakland Press, and FOX 2 Detroit. Opening statements kicked off on Tuesday, September 30.

The case dates back to October 11, 2024, when Hussein and Linda Murray fell victim to an attack in their own home. The culprits allegedly attempted to gain entry the night before but were unsuccessful. Returning the following day, they pretended to be Detroit utility workers from DTE, claiming there was a gas leak. Hussein went down to the basement with them where the gas lines were, but tragically, he never returned. He was later discovered deceased in the basement, with duct tape fastened around his wrists and ankles. Bloodstains were found in the basement and on the staircase handrails. Upstairs, Linda recounted being assaulted. She mentioned in a previous court hearing that one of the men asked for money and jewellery. When she inquired about her husband, she was struck in the face before being bound with duct tape around her wrists and ankles. She witnessed the other man coming up from the basement with blood on him.

The Oakland County medical examiner determined Hussein’s death as a homicide due to blunt force trauma and indicated signs of strangulation. The two men reportedly spent about 20 minutes inside the house, ransacking rooms and the garage, before departing with Hussein’s phone and watch. Linda managed to free herself and call for help, with the authorities later releasing Ring camera footage of the suspects. Hussein, the proprietor of Gold & Glitter Jewelry in Hamtramck, was believed to have been targeted due to his business, according to prosecutors. They contended that the attack on his residence was premeditated and deliberate.
Carlos Jose Hernandez, 37, was apprehended in Shreveport, Louisiana, some weeks later after being identified through the Ring doorbell footage. His co-accused, 39-year-old Joshua Zuazo, was arrested in Michigan. Both men entered not guilty pleas during their arraignments and are facing charges of felony murder and unlawful imprisonment. Prosecutors have stated their intention to push for a life sentence without parole if the defendants are convicted. Hernandez’s attorney, Paulette Loftin, asserted that her client had no intention of causing Murray’s death, emphasizing that it was not part of the plan or discussion.
The trial, presided over by Judge Yasmin Poles, is projected to endure several weeks. As the legal proceedings unfold, both defendants are in custody. The courtroom atmosphere remains sombre, with Hussein’s grandson reminiscing about his grandfather as a kind-hearted individual who left a profound impact on their family and community. The family is devastated by his passing but finds strength in the legacy he has left behind.
The trial saga continues, with the prosecution painting a picture of a meticulously planned crime targeting an innocent victim. The defence maintains that their clients did not have murderous intentions and are prepared to make their case as the legal battle unfolds in the Oakland County courthouse. The community awaits the verdict, mirroring the nation’s collective concern over the safety and security of its citizens in light of such harrowing events.
